Change View Type of a View Template

Does anyone know of a way to change the View Type of an already created View Template?

View template can be interchangable. You can use section view template for plan and vice versa. It depends on what you want to achieve. Click on ALL for view filter type and you should see all of the template.

Yeah, I know that we can select them, however if the type doesn't match the actual view, then anytime you go to adjust or modify the View Template from that screen, it defaults to "None" since the active View Template is not on the list.

For example, I have a few previously made View Templates for ceiling plans, however they are categorized under the "Floor, Structural, Area Plans" View Type. When I go to Assign View Template to change or adjust the view while in a ceiling plan, it automatically filters the View Types for ceiling plans and therefore defaults to "None" since the View Templates are not located there. It is just clunky and unnecessary, so it would be nice to recategorize the View Templates with the correct Type. These were made years ago, before I got here, and the office uses them all the time. It would be great to make itless of a hassle to go through our list of templates and have the filtering work as intended.

I've use section view template for 3d views and it seems to work. Revit basically cut out those parameter that isn't valid for the view. RCP for instance will have different view depth than the plan view depth. Some won't apply to it. So yea it is there but it an extra step to apply it.

Yes, that is correct. I am just wondering if there is a way to change the View Type already associated with a View Template if it was created with the wrong type. If this something that you have heard or doing or is this a setting that cannot be changed once the View Template is created?

- Assign the existing view template (A) to a View
- Change that view to use None
- Create View template from View, give it a name (B)
- Delete the existing view template (A) , choose replace all affected views with the new view template (B)
- Rename (B) to (A)

So the answer is no :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

That's what I ended up doing, just creating a new View Template using the existing one from the correct plan view. This way it was associated with the correct View Type, and then I could delete the original one that was incorrectly associated. I was just hoping it would be something easier to do with a setting rather than having to go through the hoops to replace it.

Thanks though!

Short of it being easier than just reassigning the view type. Recreating from it from the existing one is fairly simple compared to having to recreate it from scratch.

The part I'm having trouble with is that it was created in the wrong view type because, again, it is not an assignable parameter. The original view template had to be created from the "wrong" view in the first place. I've got a feeling that someone dropped the ball after the it's inception and didn't realize how easy it was to just create a new one using the settings applied to the target view type from the "wrong" one.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

The solution given changed it didn't it? Not like an 'edit type' thing, but this is just how you do that...

Here is how I resolved the issue:

1 - Open the view (e.g. a section) and apply the desired 'wrong' VT (e.g. a plan VT).
2 - View > View Templates (Drop-down) > Create Template From Current View.

This will create a new VT with the same appearance and the correct type.

That's what I would do, too. @ToanDN already suggested that and even explained a way to have Revit ask you to automatically assign it to any views that are using the template for the "wrong" type.

It would be nice to just show the whole list. instead of making us click all first.

No, it wouldn't.

That would make it too easy to assign the wrong type. There's a good reason for the extra step.
