sorry to be so specific but when I search for how to change a stair stringer to a channel I am only getting info on how to change it to the channel already in the list to select.  what I want to know is how to load a different channel to use as a stringer.  I loaded a MC 12 x 10.6 into my drawing but it doesnt add it to the list to select from in the stair/stringer type properties.

(as per the following: How to change the Section Profile of stairs' stringers in Revit | Revit 2019 | Autodesk Knowledge Ne...)

so how do I get more options onto that list?

Hi, @laura.d.morgan4.ctr ,

In the project Browser, under Families and then Profiles, you can find the profile family name that you can select in your Stringer. Click Edit to open this family. Change it and save it under a different name.

While changing it, you might want to open the Visibility / Graphics (VV) dialog to make visible all the hidden elements to delete them. Nomally you won't be able to delete pinned reference plance, it's ok, they define the insertion point of your profile. Use Line tool in the Create tab to draw the profile you need.

Load profile family and types from type catalog. Then edit stair support type and assign a profile.

okay...I feel like such a dork.  I completely failed to grok that this was looking for a friggin' PROFILE.  (Even though it was written plain as day, right there...) and was loading it under beams.

Thanks both of you so much for your patience.
