Yesterday this error message came up when attempts were made to sync -
The situation was brought under control by replacing the old central model with a latest and well-tested local. My question is - how can we be pro-active and prevent this from happening again?

Make sure your users are saving/syncing often and close out of Revit if leaving for an extended amount of time. They should also ALWAYS start with a fresh local file and not open an existing local file, even if it was from the same day.
@Anonymous I think that the opening a fresh local may be a part of the problem - here continuing to use the same local is regular practice, whereas I prefer to create a fresh local each time the project is opened.
