Central File server specification

Hi,

We're not using revit server but do have central file server where all the files are kept and access by all. We're currrently 70+ user and growing.

Can Autodesk recommend a proper hardware specification for it? or is it just same as the Revit server?

and further more, does Nimble SAN workable with Autodesk or Revit?

hi @Anonymous,

You do not need any "special" requirement.

Basically, if you do not use REVIT SERVER, your sever acts only as a network drive, onto which people will synchronyse very very often.

No software will run from your server.

So, you do not need Computational power, you need network and file storage performance.

My recommandations would be as follows:

  • best network speed possible (go for expensive network card)
  • intel xeon for multithread purposes (you do not need a very powerful one, just the multitasking properties for handling simultaneaous flile writing)
  • Raid HDD for live saving (mirror HDD), with A LOT OF MEMORY
  • 16GO RAM

Your network has to be up to the task as well!

Hi François-Gabriel,

For the Processor any recommend Core speed and Number of core? (current User 70+ and will grow to 120+ in few more months)

For HDD- any recommend speed like 7.5k, 10k of 15k?

For Raid - any recommend configuration?

For network - i'm currently using 4-1gb in link aggregate. is this capable already?

another question:

Is SAN Like Nimble applicable for network drive?

Re-hi @Anonymous,

I am not an informatician... so I wouldn't risk giving any specs... for your sake!

Just consider that you will store the data of your projects, and that you will write and re-write data with a 120 computers connected.

There might be some server-specific technology that I don't know about, and that can handle that much.

Just consider that at worst, your server will have to handle 120 connexions simultaneously and 120* ~150MO to write/compare, etc... That is 18GO to sort/write/prioritize, etc.... Considering the number of users, I guess you are part of quite a sizeable company, in which case it is worth spending the money in a consultant and a good hardware!

I cannot find it specifically laid out anywhere, but I am 90% sure that officially, only a Windows server is supported by Autodesk.

You had asked about a Nimble SAN - I have seen most SAN devices used successfully IF they were connected and shared via a Window Server host.  Meaning, you get an iSCSI connection to the SAN via your Windows Server, share that folder through Windows, and then clients connect to the Windows share.  So, the clients do NOT connect directly to the SAN.

There are numerous models of SANs, and tons of different network gear, so I obviously can't say for sure if what you are looking at will be successful.  I am sure there are successfully implementations of Revit users connecting directly to a SAN, but I have seen issues with this every once in a while.  I can't guarantee that you will have success if you share your SAN through a Windows server, but I personally cannot recall a situation where that has not worked.

Good luck!

Hi Francois-Gabriel Perraudin,

Thank you for the enlightenment.

Now i got a part of it. Just need to research more about it.

Do you know we need a special set up for file server admin? such as below? Domain registry?
