Ceiling Recess Lights place on Floor instead of Ceiling????

Hey Everyone,

I'm doing a house project for my final at school and my recess lights keep placing on the floor and I am unable to get them to place on the ceiling. My model is also upside down so the light shines up. When working in the ceiling plan it does not allow me to place anything. Thank you in advance for helping me.

You mean it's facing the wrong direction? If so, select the Light Fixture and press the tiny Flip Work Plane icon.

It's more like I don't have the ability to place my recess lights on my ceiling. When I place them they place on the floor so the lights shine up, when I want them on the ceiling shining down.

Do you have hosting options when you place this family. Look on the Contextual Tab when you place the fixtures. Do you see option for placement on Face or on Work Plane?

...what view did you place them in? Were you in a RCP view (e.g. Ceiling Plan)?

Yes, sir, it says Level: First Floor Plan. I placed it using the first-floor ceiling plan.

Hi @Anonymous

I have had this happen.  You just need to pick a different host, the option is in the ribbon.

Hi Samantha, I'm sort of new to Revit. When Choosing a new host would i just choose the ceiling for example?

Thank you. :grinsendes_Gesicht:

Yes you would choose the ceiling.  It would be easiest to do this in the 3d view or section since it keeps choosing the floors.

More than likely those are face based, meaning they will go to any kind of surface, instead of being ceiling based.

Maybe it's not you. Maybe the family is built incorrectly.  Lets take a look it. Post the family (rfa).

This seemed to work well at first but when i had to go up a floor they just made holes in my ceiling without actually placing the light.

I don't have access to 2021 workstation right now.

Try placing the "Downlight - Recessed Can.rfa" (attached) that comes with Revit.  Let me know how it goes.

BTW: Sounds like your Lighting Fixtures Category is turned off in the View where you see holes only.

See what I've circled above?

Your family is fine.

Hi @Anonymous ,

If holes are getting cut, then the family is working, it is probably just turned off.  Are you getting an error saying it is turned off / not visible?
