Post your family so that we can check it.  Otherwise we will just be guessing.

Are you trying to place it in a Ceiling View?  Or 3D View?

Just to clarify: Open the Family, select the "Light Source Definition" Ref. Plane shown in above screenshot, and UNCHECK the box next to "Origin".

That's a face based family that can host to any surface. It looks like it isn't hosted to anything in the image. You need to place it while in a RCP view and make sure "Place on Face" is selected.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Just to explain what is going on: the family has two "Origin" Ref. Planes.  It's a mistake.

How do I change that?

Open the Family, select the "Light Source Definition" Ref. Plane shown in above screenshot, and UNCHECK the box next to "Origin".

Save and Reload the Family into the Project and place it in Ceiling View or 3D View.

I opened the family of the pendent light that is not hosting correctly (it hosts but at the wrong elevation and won't move) and I could not find any box called origin to uncheck.  The Ref. level is in the family and there is a place where it calls out 8'-0" as the placement above the Ref level, but nothing about Origin.

I read down the thread, went back to the drawing at the top, made the image larger and found the proper level and the origin box.   It is fixed, thanks
