If you created an in-place mass, then...
1. Create a wall type with a structure that represents the material and thickness that you want.
2. Use the wall-by-face tool to apply the wall type that you have just created to the shape of your in-place mass.

This. Or a roof-by-face, depends on the function of the "canvas" if you care.
Right. Or...
1. Just model the in-place-mass with a thickness that represents your canvas in the first place.
