Cannot open Revit 2016 files from Windows Explorer

I cannot open any Revit 2016 files from Windows Explorer and I can't set Revit 2016 as the default 'open with' program.

The files open fine from within Revit, or when I 'drag and drop'

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

Thank you in advance.

Is this happening with only Revit?

Are you able to open dwg & word file directly?

Yes it only happens with Revit.

AutoCAD 2016, Word, Excel and everything else appears to be opening files fine.

Try opening file as a administrator, i.e. right click file/open as administrator.

You shouldn't be opening Revit files through Windows Explorer anyway, unless you can absolutely, enequivocally guarantee that you will never work in a workshared file.  Double-clicking/drag-and-dropping a workshared file to open it means you're opening and working in the central file, and that's the biggest no-no there is.

Now, if you're a one-man outfit, and you absolutely insist on double-clicking the file to open it, you need to answer a couple of other questions.  Do you have any other versions of Revit installed on your machine?  Were any of those versions installed after you installed 2016?  Did the double-click functionality work before, and now it's broken?  Or has it ever worked?

I am a one man band so worksharing is not an issue. I usually only open project files from within Revit, but when I am editing families I usually open them from Explorer because I find it easier, especially if i have just downloaded multiple files from the internet that need to be changed, resaved or renamed somewhere else.

I had previous verisions of Revit on the computer, once I installed 2016 I then removed the older versions using 'add/remove programs'. I didn't install any old versions after I installed 2016.

The double click funcitonality did work with Revit 2015 and 2014, it is now broken.

Also note that I tried to right click and 'open as administrator' but that option does come up. My user profile is an administrator profile so I'm assuming that that isn't the issue.

Thanks,

Try running a repair install on Revit 2016.  Uninstalling the older versions after installing 2016 may have messed with the file associations.  (Or you could wade into the Windows file associations dialog and see if all of the Revit file extensions are properly associated.)

I've tried running a repair, didn't work, I've reinstalled Revit 2015, didn't work for either version.

I even tried to add shortcuts to the 'SendTo' folder on my computer.

I'm thinking of handing my computer over to an IT guru, so when the issue gets sorted I'll post the solution here for others.

Has there been a resolution to this issues. I've tried reinstalling, repairing and nothing seems to work as far as opening a file from within the software.

I do seem to be able to access files from the recent list but am still unable to open and other file even using "Control O". This issue occurred at the start of a Revit course I was teaching. I was using the software the night before and it was working just fine.
