I've just discovered that you cannot dimension a mullion with a custom profile. Is this for real? Why won't it work?
See attached file. The mullions I can dimension are the built-in 'System' profiles. My custom profile (with detail item embedded) cannot be dimensioned at all.
I can snap lines the custom profile lines (the two diagonal lines) - but inconsistently I can't snap to the embedded detail item. Because why would you ever want to dimension to that?
This is completely broken!
This means we have to hand-draw detail lines over profiles to dimension them! This is madness!

Ok, that's weird - yes I am tab-selecting. I know all about tab, the letters have worn off my Tab key, and it's all polished from over-use. ![]()
This is something odd happening, I definitely cannot select the edges of any customized Curtain Wall Mullions. Something strange is happening in my Revit.
Do you typically dimension mullions that way? I've never seen it done that way. Here, we pull dimensions between between grid lines - which is usually center of mullion.
Hello
Just dimension and click the edges.. it did worked.. don't wait for any highlights..
Just click the edges while dimensioning, don't wait for the blue highlight the way generally dimension works...
It is absolutely not working on my Revit, I can't dimension to any part of a mullion except the centreline (Curtain Grid). Is there some setting I am missing that controls how dimensions select objects?
Open the Mullion Profile and try setting the "Is Reference" of the left and right Ref. Planes to "Left" and "Right". Also, make sure your profile is a contiguous, closed-loop line. No other linework.
I shouldn't have to set the 'Is Reference' - it seems others can dimension custom profile mullions without doing that. I have just done the usual restart Revit / restart PC and I still cannot dimension to custom profile mullions. To be clear I can dimension to System Mullions.
The profile I have is also completely square, no angled lines that might preclude dimenions due to non-parallel sides.
If it makes a difference I'm using Revit 2020.2.3
Hey Adrian,
The issue is the edge doesn't highlight when you tab select it. If you look at the status bar you will see it saying "cut edge" of the profile, so it can be dimensioned its just not obvious.

I agree. It was only a suggestion, sir. Like I and everybody else has said here; we cannot replicate your issue. So where does that leave it. Is it a hardware issue? Doubtful. Is it "a loose nut behind the keyboard"? Doubtful. Is it because of an Add-In? Maybe.

Well now it seems to be working - it just doesn't show the highlights to give you any fedback as to what you are selecting. It's proving very difficult in our main file due to complex mullion shapes, but I've now managed to get it to work in my test file.
Another Revit quirk to remember.
