Can't select parent family, only nested families

In an elevation view, I can only select the nested families of a parent family, not the parent family itself. This is inverse to normal operation, where I have to tab among the nested families to select one (say, to alter a type parameter). Plan view behaves normally.

I actually like this behaviour, but I would like to know how to toggle it.

I've outsmarted myself. I made the parent family generic so the tagger wouldn't see it, but the elevation view was set to not show the generic category, so it showed only the nested families, which are in categories visible in the view.
