You need to model those crosses as an extrusion. It does not make sense to make two crossing rectangular sweeps then join them! and you do not need reference lines for the path
And you need to work more with reference planes, constrain these with dimensions/labels, then lock the sketch lines to the reference planes. Constraining sketch lines directly with labeled dimensions does not always work well. It sometimes break even when it is a simple extrusion or sweep.
i would personally build this family the way a carpenter would craft it. If there is a joint I would rather let it show.
