Is it safe to open the same worksharing central model from multiple revit instances by a single user on a single machine?
It would be really useful as right now Revit keeps crashing and waiting to open it takes a very long time.

You want to have multiple sessions open so if one crashes you can go to another? did I understand that correctly?

Yes, exactly. You can open another session. When the first session crashes the idea was for the second session to pick up any changes (synchronize) and keep on going relatively quickly (as opposed to the current situation when opening revit and reloading the model takes about 5 minutes).
Which by the way makes me wonder if Autodesk is looking into "debloating" Revit to make it start faster - Microsoft has done it for their infamous Visual Studio's startup times already.
You should investigate why it is crashing if this is a frequent problem. IME, crashes are very rare.
I doubt Autodesk made provisions for what you want to do. So even if it works, it may not be more reliable than just one instance.
I think you are looking for trouble if you try this.
I agree that you should find the cause of your crashes rather than attempting a questionable workaround.
you may be able to, but as others have said, i wouldn't recommend it. I'd look more into why it is taking 5min+ to open a model. in my office we work on files, on average, around 200-300mg. My current Arch model is 100mg with 11 links totaling over 800mg. it took less than 3 min to open.

No, the first "you" to sync will win and the "others" won't be able to because Revit won't be able to differentiate which you is which. You might get away with it if you're careful to only borrow elements that the other you hasn't touched but it is too easy to accidentally borrow something you've already interacted with. Add in the fact that you're motivated to do this because of a crash. Revit still needs to get the file open again after a crash and other sessions would be unstable even more so.
Personally I think Revit should support multiple sessions of the same project. It should increment the user name when an additional session is started so we can be "unique" in each session. We used to be able to do it before the subscription/user based system was imposed.

Thanks @SteveKStafford, that makes sense. Good to know that it was once possible - I'm tempted to ask Autodesk to bring support for this use case back in the future releases then.
