Can I use a pitched roof with variable thickness material?

Hi Guys, I'm very new to Revit and this is my first project.

My problem is I'm trying to create a pitched roof for the rear and side return extension on Victorian house. I need to incorporate a firring strip into the roof build up which runs from 50-150mm in thickness (left hand side on screenshots). This is to raise the roof surface enough to accommodate a gutter on the left hand side. So the roof rafters and top deck are at slightly different pitches.

Flat roofs seems to have the ability to have variable thickness layers, but not pitched roofs. In the screenshot i've tried making two roofs one on top of the other, but that means the skylights only cut the first roof and the family doesn't cut through both as they're not connected and I need them to cut through both.

If I ignore the buildup and make two generic roofs at varying pitches and join them the skylight family doesn't cut through both either.

I've been struggling for the past couple of days to try and figure this out but have run out of ideas. I was very much hoping you guys might have an idea how to do this, I'd be extremely grateful for any insight!

Make skylight with a void and use cut geometry to cut both roofs.
