I made a lamp out of 3 pieces. I originally made each piece in the lighting fixture category. Then I combined them in a host family. However this made light emanate from metal parts that should not light up. I re maid the 2 pieces I did not want to light up in a generic family (A none light fixture family Type) I just chose generic out of the list. How can I assign the material (Example: Aluminum) and the color to it (Example: Black)

In your family, go to
Manage tab>>Object Styles
You will be able to see the categories and subcategories. When you click on the empty space under Materials, you will be take to the Material Editor. Go to the Appearance tab. That will take you to the Material Library, where you can assign / add / create / modify materials.
I'm confused. you seem to be talking about two entirely different issues that don't correlate with each other. Where the light source is originating from has nothing to do with materials.
@barthbradley the OP has already seen the light and fixed it!
They are two different issues. That was unnecessary of me to go into that detail of why I re made two parts as generic family types.
I should have left that whole part out.
Create a material parameter for each part in the part families, associate them with parameters in the parent family so that you have the flexibility to create various types from a single family when you load it in your project.
Cool Video. Thanks. I will finish watching tonight at home. I have to get back to other task now at work in a few min

Please use family type parameters to apply a different material to each piece of geometry in the component.
You can assign a different material to each part of the component.
When creating a parameter, in the Parameter Properties dialog, do the following:
Properties panel
