Can anyone explain why the dimension tool doesn't snap the same on these shapes?

Revit 2019.

I have two extrusions in Revit that came in from an IFC source. When hovering over them with the dimension tool in the plan view, the lines highlight in blue expectedly, however, only some of the lines highlight when hovered over.

The two shapes don't even behave the same, on one, I can highlight the lines on the left side of the shape, on the other, I can only highlight the lines on the right side of the shape.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with these basic shapes or why they might behave this way? Has anyone seen this before? See the attached Revit file.

PS. If I export this from revit to IFC, then open the resulting IFC file in Revit, I can still only highlight half the lines, but now the two shapes behave the same.

They are acting exactly similar to each other...you just need to tab over the elements to highlight the proper element/reference to select.

What you have there is an imported 3D symbol. When you hover over,  with the cursor there are two possibilities

  • it picks up a vertical surface => it highlights Blue (this is visible you see it, you are happy)
  • it picks up some Edge or Reference => (it can be any edge, a far most lower which is concealed)

You should also note that with such miniscule dimensions (0.7mm) you will definitely get unpredictable behavior and undesirable graphics.

Hey,

Thanks RDAOU! What a thorough video. I had tried tab but I guess I wasn't persistent enough. After watching you do it I tried again and found I had to be more precise with my mouse placement and I had to hit tab twice. What a relief, thank you for taking the time to point that out.
