Can a lamp frame or base act as a host?

When making my lamp Family can the lamp frame or base act as a host and then i can bring in the shade as a shared family?

If so how do I tell Revit to make the base the host?

you can make anything a host. what is your question specifically? What are you considering right now? How the Host gets placed and oriented in the project? Or how the nested family gets placed and oriented into the Host? Or...

Thanks. I did not know if it had to be a wall or roof or floor or something like that.

Also although I red the help links that were posted for me I am uncertain of how to tell Revit to make the base of the lamp be the host so the other parts can be shared with it.

We've got a disconnect here. You're talking about System Families. That has nothing to do with what we've been advising you on.

May I suggest you do some reading on creating Faced-Based Families, Wall-Based Families, Roof-Based Families, etc.
