CALCULATING AMOUNT OF TILE IN AREA

Hello expert,

just wondering as the title above, can Revit calculate amount of tile in an area. For example I have a Unit Apartment and want to use 60x60 cm tiles/ceramic in that room, how many tiles that I can use in that area. Can Revit do that and publish in material take off?

Many thanks!

BR, Kris!

It can do what you ask, but you need to add a calculated value to the schedule so Revit knows how to take the overall area and break it into the "tile sized" units.

In this example I added a calculated value to the material takeoff schedule that used the 60cm x 60cm tile you indicated.  The formula I used looked like this:

(Material: Area / 1 m²) / .36

I am taking the overall area of the room and dividing by 1 to get a "unitless" number I can work with, and then dividing by the tile unit size. This will give me an over all count of the tiles. I used a round number here just to make it work out clean, but it would work the same no matter the room size.

Well, it seems to be easy when the area plan(unit) tend to be rectangle/square, what if not? Then what if the tiles has start point and end point. Sometimes the tiles start from center, align right or left (then it has half only tiles of the rest area) Please assist.
Thanks a lot.

It would not make a difference, the tile count would be the same basically. You would come up with fractional numbers and have to round up to get to a reasonable amount of tile that would be needed. I would use the same basic formula and then add a "factor" to account for "irregularities". if you have lots of "odd" shaped rooms the factor i would add would be slightly higher. This would probably be based on some kind of rule of thumb or experience. I am not a contractor by trade but i could get close. Outside of drawing every single tile by hand, you will never get an "exact" amount. Even if you did it would not account for breakage, and some inherent waste in the construction process..

Filter other materials out of the schedule?
