CAD imports as symbolic

So, I'm making some families. Basically, client provides me with a .step file. Also a top, front and side views of the object in Autocad. Basically everything I  need. My current workflow is to take the step file and import it into Autocad then explode everything down to the face and delete everything I don't need to keep file size down. Then, I assign the faces layers. After that I import into Revit and apply textures to the autocad layers using the object styles. This all works pretty great.

The thing I'm wondering about is, when I start to use the top front and side views as symbolic. Currently, I import the CAD object then explode it. This creates model lines that I convert to symbolic lines. I think I would rather just import and keep the CAD symbol like I do the model. Is there a way to make the CAD import behave like symbolic lines? Currently I'm messing around with just turning off the CAD import in the respective view using visibility settings (plan/rcp - front/back etc) which works, but I was wondering if there was an even better way because the problem is, the CAD imports of the front, top and side show up in 3D views where I only want the 3d model import to do that.

Just out of curiosity, why not create Revit Elements of your CAD Elements. From your workflow description, I think it would be the same amount of work, if not less.

They export very complicated nurbs models from Solidworks to STEP files. There is no way I could model these things quickly. If I use the step file alone, it contains screws, washers, bolts and pipe collars that increase the file size. So I go in and delete those things and any faces that aren't part of the shell of the object. And they import into Revit very well so that't not a problem.

The issue is, their front, top and side CAD files are also exports from Solidworks and it creates a 2d CAD drawing but it has a ton of lines that are overlapped and creates little line segments all over. If I explode the cad file, it will create hundreds of model lines that take about 20 minutes to convert to symbolic ones. Even if I use the overkill command while in Autocad first, it still doesn't trim it down.
