When you start a blend, the icon in the ribbon shows the top highlighted in blue but you are really creating the base. When you create the top, the base is highlighted. Does anyone else find this confusing?

Don't recall tbh, didn't you drag the top below the bottom or have a negative offset?
So, what Revit version do you have? Are we talking about a model in-place or in a family (not that it matters I think).
The button just is a go-to top/bottom edit... it is obvious you're working in the other no?
It certainly was at the beginning, you just get used to it. I guess there could be two icons for base and top (not only for this tool) to make it clearer.
This buttons don't show the profile that you are working on.
They are there to allow you to go to bottom when you are working on Top and go to Top when you are working on bottom.
To know which profile you are working at, look at below location.

If you just started the blend command there shouldn't be anything to highlight...unless you are referring to the Edit Top/Base buttons on the panel (The button on the panel usually displays the opposite of what you are editing).
At least that's how it works on my screen

Thank you. That is what I was looking for! And thanks to all the other responses.
In Revit version 2019/2020 the Edit Top and Edit Bottom button don't show simultanously as shown above. So^... I think upgrading would resolve some of your trouble? ^
