BIM 360 Model Open & Sync Slow, even without linked models

The BIM 360 model has been slow since the deadline. The loading bar constantly freezes at a certain point for a long time, like the "Regenerating" step when anyone tries to sync. I've tried to purge and audit the model.

The journal text below shows the big waiting time when I opened the model this morning, with turning off all the worksets for the linked model.

Does anyone have an idea what the "BIG_GAP [Cloud]postLoadDocument" and "Unnecessary nesting" are?

Has the path to the linked model changed? The journal text seems to indicate that it is taking time to search for a link(s) that is stored locally (D drive) instead of the cloud with the project. It could just be an intermittent issue, connectivity. We experienced much slower than usual performance earlier this week.

When you write "turning off worksets" do you mean closing the workset(s) that the link is assigned to during File > Open using the Specify option? Or using Manage Links to close worksets "inside" the link.

How many people work on the project file(s) at the same time? Do you attempt to stagger your sync w/Central so you don't stack up your data processing requests?

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have a D drive in my machine, and I double-checked, and there's no linked model/CAD/PDF/image from the D drive in the model at all.

The former. So the whole linked model is not loaded at all.

6 people maximum during the deadline. But this happens now even when two people work on the model.

If it is actually the file's health to blame, check the project's warnings. How many are there? Any warnings that can impact calculations (area/volume) are going to impact performance to some degree. Check to see how many views are not on sheets, that won't ever be. Remove them from the project. Purge unused families that are not likely to be used now. What version of Revit are you working in? If it is older than 2024 then seriously consider an upgrade of the software and the project(s). I don't like having to deal with a 2020 project these days, and we have some lingering there. So much "less than"...

From a maintenance perspective, this is what I do at least once a week to my own computer:

  • Clear the Collaboration Cache for each version of Revit I've used
  • Edit the Revit.ini file to eliminate the items listed under [Recent File List] and [Recent Workset List]
  • Clear my journal cache
  • Clear the TEMP file (OS user data)

Clearing the collaboration cache forces Revit to download fresh data for each project file I open. It does mean the first time I do that it will take a bit longer but with fresh data it seems to improve the experience afterward. It also depends on how active the project has been, how many people have been cranking on it.

The INI file editing can help resolve the time it takes when you click on the File menu...if there are many references in the list then Revit is parsing that and each path that is included before it can move on to whatever you wanted to do via File. If there are dead files/paths, things that don't exist at that location anymore then it's just time wasted trying to "find them". I work/interact with many projects and files each day so my "lists" can get quite long sometimes. If you only work on a couple each day it might not be that interesting or help at all.

Similar for the journal, the journal files aren't an impact and keeping them around might help diagnose an issue later. However this folder can have copies of content and project files you've interacted with and they take up space. It's more a PC maintenance item I think about...so I have as much free hard drive space possible.

...and sometimes it's not me...it's them, the cloud access just gets sluggish since there are more of us than them. Whether it is our connection to the cloud or theirs or their hardware or ours...it's all them to me 🙂 Good luck!
