Hello,
I am trying to figure out the best way to cut a roof in my model (see below).
Initially I tried to use the vertical cut tool, but this causes many errors for me and makes parts of my lower walls disconnect from the upper walls. The gable side also partly disconnects for whatever reason.
As this did not deliver expected results I thought of just using the join roof tool to join the lower roof to the point where it meets the flat higher roof. For some reason though when I click the join roof tool I am unable to select the necessary edge.
Anyone have any ideas on this one?
Vertical opening should work here, you just need to detach your wall from the higher roof and attach them to your lower roof.
you can also model the higher roof without vertical opening, just need to pick wall with negative overhang. Then use join geometry to join it with the lower roof.
or, you can model the roof by extrusion. It will be a single roof then.
Hello Bin,
Thanks for your reply.
I am slightly thrown off by your first suggestion. I'm not sure if it was clear in my original post but the "wall" is actually two walls. It is modeled this way as the building in real life is slightly crooked.
seems to me that a void extrusion would be what I would try..
Thank you for the suggestion George.
Unfortunately it's giving me all the same errors as a vertical opening :(.
when that happens to me i usually let the walls detach, then adjust the wall profiles.. might not be the best way, but it works until i learn more.
Yes sir.
However, I think my model at the moment is different to the one you have drawn as it features multiple walls.
the walls do not run parallel which is why I may be running into these errors.
Since you already created 3 walls, make sure they align properly; the lower walls 1 and 2 should not have their top attached to any roof; the upper wall 3 should have not its base attached to any roof, and should have its top attached to the low-slope roof.
But it would be cleaner if you built the 3 walls as a single wall with opening. See attached.
