Beam names

So by default Revit names W beams like this W12X20, is there a way to edit the entire family to name them like W12x20, the proper way to label the beams is with a small x and I don't want to have to rename on every project. Thanks

Change the name then.  You can do it directly in the Project Browser if you like. 

If the library names don't match your standard, then rename them. Note that some families also have an associated Type Catalog.  The names would need to be changed in that text file as well.

the text file is read-only how can I change that or how can I save a new one and change what the family references.

That can be accomplished through Windows.  You can change permissions for the text file just like you would do for any other file or folder.
