Batch print - lights missing

Revit Arch 2016 - user is trying to batch print electrical lighting plans but the lights are not showing up on the PDF.  They show up when he prints each page individually.  I can't find a setting anywhere that would cause that.  We also tried different PDF drivers like CutePDF and Nitro.  No luck.  Any suggestions?

Do the light fixture families have some form of symbol in them and if so how was this created(detail lines, nested annotation)?  What happens if the ceilings are turned off while batch printing?  Do lights show up then?

The lights are in a garage so no ceiling.  They are face-based models.  The family is composed of two nested detail components, one is a filled region, the other is 4 detail lines.  I am pretty sure they just used a Revit standard fixture as a base then modified some of the basic settings for their schedule so nothing that should be causing an issue.
