Backup Files for Workshared Projects

Hi!

My office is working on a project and we have a central model that is on the server (this is our first project like this). Yesterday I lost a lot of work and I was not able to undo (Ctrl Z) any of my commands. We figured that this was because I had recently deleted a view and then all the "undo's" were purged. I have looked up ways to have Revit automatically save backups or create journals, however I see that this is not possible with Workshared projects on a server. What do you suggest we do?

Hi Lauren,

There is nothing worse than deleting a view...especially if it's by mistake and you cant undo...still not sure why Revit hasnt implemented an alert dialog asking if you are sure you want to delete this?! well...at least an option of it.

Anyway, I guess what you are referring to is the Restore Backup feature of Revit...found in the Collaborate => Synchronize Tab

I suggest that this is used with some caution, as you dont want to overwrite the work your colleagues have done. A better solution would be to save a Backup as a separate model, create a new local from your current model and then copy and paste back in what you require from the back up.

If you have deleted a view and cant undo it, get one of your colleagues to duplicate the view (with detailing if required) so that when you sync, even the view may be deleted you will still have the duplicate and can just rename it.

Exactly how did you lose a lot of work by not being able to undo?

Thank you for your help. The link does what was needed to be done.

With the loss of the "undo's". It was my fault, I just didn't realise what I was doing. I deleted a section that I had only put in for temporary modeling purposes.I had moved past the point of needing and now it was in my way, I deleted it. Revit did ask me if I wanted to delete the view, which I was fine with, so I said OK. What I didn't realise was that when this happens all the "undo's" would be purged. So I continued to work on one floor and then to go back to the previous floor to find the work was gone. Both my collegue and myself had already saved and syncronised before I knew this had happened.
