Autodesk Ecotect and Revit

I'm working on a study which combines Esri CityEngine models with Ecotect analysis. My license expired.

I checked Ecotect is not available anymore for purchase as it is being integrated into Revit product family.
My question is: does Revit 2016 already have this new functionality?

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the community.

Before I start, It should be noted, that you can request a previous version of the software with a subscription.

As you mentioned Ecotect is being integrated into Revit, the Transition Guide, indicates that Solar Analysis, Sun and Shadow Studies, Daylighting and Lighting, Thermal performance, Whole Building Energy Analysis, and Weather Data Visualization. As of right now:

Solar Analysis - plug-in, this link is for 'lightning analysis', which is only available right now for 2014 & 2015

Sun and Shadow Studies - You can turn the sun path on and off on the bottom toolbar

Daylighting and Lighting - this would also fall under the lighting analysis linked above

Thermal performance

Whole Building Energy Analysis - integrated in energyy analysis

Weather Data Visualization -This has been available in Revit since 2010, however you should looking into Green Building Studio

Dear Matthew,

thank you for answering my question.

You said that I can request a previous version of the software. You mean Ecotect??

Here in our university we have autodesk educational licences, but Ecotect is no longer available. Is it possible to get it?

We were working on a study and we got completely stuck.

Here is the methodology we follow: http://www.ia.arch.ethz.ch/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Ecotect-Tutorial.pdf

As far as Revit solar analysis is concerned, is it able to work at the urban scale? I mean, with sets of buildings? And, are we able to get visual results (color grids) as we had in Ecotect?

I appreciate your answer.

We don't know what to do...

Best regards,

Hi @Anonymous,

You're welcome! You can request a previous version of the software that you have under subscription, so say you have Revit 2016, you can request Revit 2015 (which this is available in). Ecotect is no requestable as it is not under subscription and it is no longer sold, as of March 2015.

You will get color coded results of the energy analysis. See the energy analysis help guide here. I am not familair with running this on multiple buildings, however if all the buildings are within the same project, I would assume the analysis would be run on all of the buildings. I would say just give it a try on your project, it should already be available on the more current versions of Revit.

Please also take a look at the Autodesk Sustainable Design page for more information. Also please accept the above solution if it answered your questions, in order to help others.

You mean Revit 2016 does not have the whole set of Ecotect features, right?

Thank you for answering Matthew.

Yes, but they wouldn't like to say those words. It is a shame Autodesk get rid off such valuable tool without integrate all of its features to Recit. Meanwhile there are better alternative in the market than those from Autodesk.
