Attach surface to ground

Hello Smiley (fröhlich)

As a practice before testing real conception I tried a simple case of gridshell structure made out of a pattern based family.

But I'm facing two small issues Smiley (traurig) :

  • I can't attach my spline points to the topography, I only manage to make point close to it manually
  • I can't attach my surface ( and by extension the gridshell) to the ground

Does anyone have an idea of how to do such thing Smiley (überglücklich)

Thank you in advance !

Why not just insert your Topo into the mass sketch environment?

Oh, well ... I didn't know I could make/insert topo while creating an in situ mass Smiley (überglücklich), and after looking I don't even know how as the topo ribbon doesn't appear in mass sketching mode Verlegener Smiley.

I'm not talking about creating a Revit Toposurface while inside of Mass editing environment.  I talking about importing CAD into the Mass editing environment. You can export an existing Revit Topourface to CAD, and import it back into the Mass editing environment.  You can then apply Curtain Wall Systems, Walls and Roofs to the faces of the "Toposurface" Mass outside of the Mass editing environment.

As you noticed, you can't place a spline directly onto a TopoSurface. You need a intermediary Element.

Planting Families have a TopoSurface as host, and "follow" the surface.

  • Make a planting family, containing 1 vertical ModelLine.
  • Place an instance of this family on every point where you need to attach the spline to the surface.
  • Host the (first) point of the spline onto the vertical line of the family.
  • Select the point of the spline on the planting family  and set the Normalized Curve Parameter to 0 ( or 1), to attach to the ground.

Didn't taught of Planting familiies ... It's a wonderful tips ! Neither did I for importing the CAD inside the masse editor !

Thank you very much ! Smiley (überglücklich)
