Array Movement Parameter?

Hi all, I'm currently working on a project that has an irregular column type. I've broken a family into two pieces, the top which is it's own separate family and the bottom which I have setup as an array. The attempt being that the bottom can have blocks added or taken away without affecting the geometry of the top.

The question, is there a way to get the top to move with the array? So if a block was added/subtracted from the bottom, the top would adjust accordingly.

Nest the top family into the bottom family containing the array.

Then add a height parameter that controls a reference plane (drawn in elevation/section) in the array family. The parameter will be calculated by multiplying the height of a single block by the array count.

You can then lock the bottom of the nested family to that reference plane (in elevation or section) which will move up and down depending on how many blocks there are.

You could also add a visibility parameter to the nested family to hide it if you don't always need to see it.
