My problem is this, when i set up a parameter of say 5'-0" and i want to have it shorten to 4'-0", I get this (above).

I did this and it works: Align lines to reference line. Define another dimension total=2' + trim assuming the initial length of the lines is 2'.

Add a dimension inside the array group that controls the length of the line (dimensioned to the endpoints of the line).

Then outside of the array, align and lock one end of the arrayed line to one of the ref planes at the ends for the first 2 items in the array.

The other option which is standard for more complicated arrays is to make the arrayed item a separate family and nest it into the family where it will be arrayed. This gives better control over the sizing of the object.

I have attached my sample R2024 family for you to look at.
