Areabook extension - how to troubleshoot crash during calculation?

This is my first time using this extension and ... what an eye opener. If you want to find out what objects/items in your model are miscategorized, this is the way to go.

When running areabook, the window calculation crashes Revit. As soon as I take the windows out of the calculation, the calc runs through fine. All of my windows are Marvin - custom sized objects derived from Marvin supplied families. How can I troubleshoot exactly which window causes the problem? Is there a log somewhere that captures the calculations happening in the background?

Thx,

Marc

Hi, Mark,

It's Judy again from the Revit support team. The first thing to do when troubleshooting crashes is to make sure you've got the latest build of Revit installed. If you're using Revit 2016, that should be Revit 2016 R2 UR7, and if you're using Revit 2017, the latest build it Revit 2017.1.1.

If updating the software doesn't fix the problem, from your description, it's sounds like it could be the window families that are causing the problem. Can you try replacing your current window families with some out-of-the box Autodesk window families and running the calc again to see if the results are different? What we want to do is see if it's "windows" or "Marvin windows" that might be causing the issue.

I'd like to see a journal file for further troubleshooting if you don't mind sending one. Please collect a journal file using the following procedure to ensure that only the relevant information is recorded in the journal:

  1. Close Revit completely (so that a new session can be started).
  2. Reopen Revit.
  3. Reproduce the issue.
  4. Without closing Revit, collect the latest (highest-numbered) journal file. Journal file names have this format: 0001.txt.

Journal files can be found here:

Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\<Product name and release>\Journals (NOTE: If you don’t see the AppData folder, you may need to check the Show Hidden Files and Folders button in the Control Panel.)

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!
