Hello everyone. When I got the email saying today was the day to ask ANY question I had for the AutoDesk team i got excited because there is one question that i consistently get a different answer from Autodesk reps when asking. Here it is:
On your website, you have and still currently as of writing this, claim that all versions of Revit, 2014 - 2017 at least, are compatible with Windows 7 as well as Windows server 2012 R2....however, when using a Windows Server 2012 R2 file server (which uses SMB2/3 by default) to serve Revit files to Windows 7 clients (SMB2 by default), there are all kinds of errors and according to my experience, the application is unusable.
Things get muddier when you contact AutoDesk and generally the answer is something along the lines of "Oh yeah, that is a known issue, you have to use SMB version 1". We also have gotten a number of answers similar to "this is a Microsoft thing, it is their fault" and also "I heard that this is going to be resolved in the Revit 20## version coming soon, really soon". This is where I get all / most of my questions from:
1) Will Revit EVER work between a Win 7 client and a Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer OS?
2) Why does AutoDesk not warn / inform customers of this issue to prevent new companies from building server / workstation environments with this setup?
Some other questions that are not entirely related:
3) When installing pretty much any version of Revit 2014 - 2017, there are all kinds of .lnk file errors that have occurred on almost every machine I have ever installed Revit on. Support has told us "these can be ignored" but it means sitting and babysitting the install just to hit OK on meaningless errors.....will this ever be fixed? Why was this allowed in a production version of this very expensive software in the first place?
4) When troubleshooting the SMB issues mentioned above, AutoDesk employees constantly told us to check out / get Revit Server....we have done this, but the documentation on it is very very minimal and the support reps that are knowledgable about it seem even less. Why push the software so heavily if you dont know what it is/how it works / how to support it?
I am sure I am will remember some of the other questions I have come up with over the years and will edit them in later to make it seem like yall are lazy and only answered some of my questions....lol.....also I hope that my questions arent too hostile to be answered honestly. THanks.
Thank you for the question(s).
On the topic of getting answers. I've found that it's generally easier to answer if each separate question is in its own thread. In some cases (like item 3 regarding LNK file errors) different questions would be better served in a separate board (like Installation and Licensing).
Let's start with questions 1 & 2.
From my experience with this particular issue, I have seen Windows 7 systems working with Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers (without specifically disabling SMBv2/3). On the other hand I have also seen errors like the following:
Revit Error: "File is being accessed by someone else" or crash on Sync in mixed Windows environments
At this point further troubleshooting is needed to determine the cause in each particular setup.
Here is a Microsoft Technet article on some SMB caches that we could test disabling to see if it impacts the behavior:
SMB2 Client Redirector Caches Explained
For the "in use message" that seems to be the most common I've seen in this situation, the DirectoryCacheLifetime setting seems to be the most interesting one to disable.
Do you currently have a setup where you can test this?
