Angled Dimensioning. Used to be so simple to do!

I simply want to insert an aligned dimension of an angled wall but I can't even pick the end point of the wall, not even the middle of the wall. This is a problem that Autodesk has known about for a long time, they seem to not do anything about it. Just go try it for yourself, an angled wall that is connected to another wall, and try putting an aligned dimension. Revit has already provided a solution but it requires deleting the wall! Hope they can fix this.

Are you referring to something like this? I had no issues dimensioning this wall. Had to hit Tab to get the intersection but the dimension can be placed Angled Wall.jpg

Yes exactly, and I've tried tab and it doesn't work. I am on Revit 2019, maybe you're using Revit 2021? I know Tab would make this function work but for some reason it just switches through the witness lines instead of actual points. Maybe there's a setting for this I'm not sure. But yes this is what my Problem looks like.

I was able to recreate this in Revit 2021. I had to start with the end of the angled wall and then find the intersection of the stud.

I'm going to move this to the Revit Architecture forum for more input, but let me know if I can be of more assistance.

I recreated in 2019 so it can be done. Key is to start with the free end of the wall then dimension back to the intersection, use tab and cursor position to toggle snaps.

If the wall is between two other walls that does not work, but since you can dimension between the parallel walls and then dimension the offset like I show below it should work. This is how they will layout in the field anyway.

Thank you, I tried tab and it turns out I have to hold it while using the dimension instead of just pressing it. Also should be a feature to grab the midpoint of the wall because some firms have it standard to measure to the middle of the wall. That’s what I am trying to do, I worked around it by using a reference plane.

Appreciate though.

I will try that, thanks!

Nope, don't need to.

Tab in the corner until only a point is selected, then dimenstion the other side.

See below, even dimensioned 2 angled corners (Revit 2019)

That behavior is inconsistant. Sometimes it gives you what you show and other times it forces a perpendicular dimension to the orthoginal walls. In my example above with the angled wall between to other walls it would not tab snap to the wall intersections and set the angle dimension, only the horizontal. I have struggled with that many times before. Free wall no problem captured wall=problem.

Link us to this solution you referred to.   I have no idea what you are talking about.

The old workaround involved deleting or cutting to clipboard and pasting or drawing back and clicking the create dimension from the temporary dimension. Then editing the witness lines. This still works but can delete associated floors ceilings and hosted items from linked models as the ID number for the wall will change.

The chain of elements that can be deleted is long so be careful with that method on projects that are complex or fully built out

Uhm....?? show me a screenshot of a wall you can't add dimensions to.

The visible lines of the wall can be picked and dimensioned...a wall centerline can't, because it's not visible but other than that....?
