An unrecoverable error is occurring when I try to sync, save, or audit

The model was started back in October of 2015 and has been running smoothly until yesterday (5/17/16). Now I can still open it and move everything around just fine, but when I try to sync or save locally it crashes and gives me this,

"An unrecoverable error has occurred.  The program will now be terminated.  All of your data has been recently saved, so there is no need to create recovery files."

I have tried detaching from the Central file (preserving and not preserving worksets) and saving as a new central but still get booted upon save. I have tried auditing while opening but then it crashes again and gives me the same message upon shutting down while trying to audit.

I have opened other models and saved and synced with them just fine since this error has occurred, and I have opened and saved an older version of the some model succesfully as well. This tells me that there is something wrong with my most up-to-date model that I just can not find since it won't let me audit and I can't work around it by detaching and creating a new central since the problem appears to be within the model itself.

Luckily we are into the bidding phase of the affected project now but I still have addenda and revisions to make so how do I find the problem and fix this issue ASAP??

Solution:

  1. Ensure everyone is updated to the latest build
  2. Open the project with the Audit checkbox selected.
    1. If the model will not open when auditing, go through the steps in the following article, and then once you are able to audit the model go through the rest of the steps below: Cannot open file with audit in Revit
  3. Open the latest journal file recorded and look for lines that look like:
      ' 3:< [Family Name], LoadedId = [Element#], GUID = 6ec8b336-60db-4ece-84d9-f9ff6da57711, refers to a NON_EXISTENT_CONTENT_DOC. Please reload!
  4. Reload the associated families (from a backup or family library) for any lines found (the line will start with the name of the family).

Note: When reloading families, use the Load Family command or open the family first and use Load into Project (avoid right clicking on the family in the Project Browser and selecting Reload).

If there are a large number of families to re-load you could use the following steps to more quickly reload them:

  1. Find good copies of the affected files (this could be from a family library or from a different project file). (To get the families saved out of an uncorrupted project file use the Save As -> Library -> Family option.)
  2. Create a separate folder to place the families that need to be reloaded.
  3. Place a copy of the families that need to be reloaded into the folder.
  4. Open the Revit model.
  5. Drag all of the families from the folder into the project window.
  6. When prompted to overwrite the first family, check the box "Do this for all loading families". (If prompted regarding overwriting again, check this box again.)

If you encounter errors/warnings when reloading the families (using the steps above), go through the following steps:

  1. Identify the particular families that are leading to an error/warning (the message may appear immediately after you click the Overwrite option for the family, or it may appear after reloading a few families of the same category).
  2. Reload the families that do not lead to an error/warning
  3. For the families that show an error/warning try individually reloading them by right clicking on them in the project browser and then clicking Reload (then select the family file and click OK).
  4. If right clicking and selecting Reload doesn't work, try opening the family and using the Load into Project command.
