All wall inserts deleted!

Scratching my head with this one:

I have a BASIC WALL with some curtain wall embedded.

I have some windows inserted in the same basic wall.

If I move, extend or change the height of the embedded curtain wall then I get this message:

"Switching element type to Curtain element. All inserts in the element will be deleted."

...and ALL the windows are deleted.

Is there a workaround for this completely incomprehensible behaviour?

Thanks!

Rooth

@roothcad Hi :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

It would be nice if you could copy the wall including inserts & curtain wall and paste it in a new clean project which you can upload here. Then we could check what the issue is...and advise you accordingly

Meanwhile; you could try unchecking the embeded property of the curtain wall and usie wall opening + a non-embeded curtain wall (should solve the problem you are having)

I can't seem to replicate your problem.  I even stretched the CW to overlap the windows in the  Wall and it wouldn't delete the windows.

By the way, after changing the CW type to non embedded, just use Cut Geometry to cut the CW off the wall.   That will create an opening.

Curtain walls are already set up to not auto-embed - we would like to use a window or wall based generic family in order to layer the plan/section join cleanup as a detail component which can't be done with an opening.

I couldn't fully replicate the problem in a clean model but have a piece of the trouble maker attached...seems to be a proximity problem - only deletes if the c.w. gets too close.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

@roothcad Hi again

It is not the curtain wall It is your Insert Family...At the moment I can't give it much time but a quick fix which seemed to resolve it was Switching category

Edit... nevermind its not the category!! tried to replicate but didnt work I must have tweaked something else!! BUT DEFINITLY the insert family is busted cuz if one inserts any window it works fine!!!

Alas, not as such - that was my 1st go to when I noticed the problem - generic or window they all disappear!

I think the answer is to remodel the walls and reinsert - I inherited the model from a client and I think it went through a round of complex joins and profile edits.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Cheers

@roothcad

It is just the insert...I tried any other window or door and it works fine with the curtain wall. So you must have modeled something wrong in the insert family and unfortunately I dont have much time to spare tonight :verwirrtes_Gesicht: Can check it for you tomorrow,,,

Your solution is 100% dump the insert family and use another

I had the same result with a standard acad windows... would delete the window if the c.w. if it got within 50 mm

@roothcad

There is nothing wrong with the OOTB window families see screencast...there is definitly something wrong with the insert you modeled, If you select it and drag it...

Example:

  1. Notice the blue dotted window around it (the enclosure) it shouldnet be that way off from the window!!
  2. If you edit the family, Jambs not constrained properly, Sill and Head are nested and they too are not properly constrained
  3. the host in the family (the wall) it has been modified from that of the template... you or someone added layers to it
  4. and so on!

Look at the screencast,,,I used an OOTB family and it functions perfectly ok...Cannot add more than this on this topic...Dump your insert family and model a proper one would be easier than back tracking to find where it went wrong. And drop the nested families,,,it is simple enough to sweep everything in the family itself

It looks like the CW got corrupted somehow. Cut it (CW), paste it aligned to same place, cut the wall, or use auto-embed and it should work.
