I need to add a new handrail to an existing stair. the old rail is being demo'd. if I read the revit forum correct - how do I account for the demolition of the old rail, and being able to add a new rail to the existing stair? (forum - I cannot add a new rail when the stair has an existing rail in place)
You mean you are demolishing only a portion of the existing Railings? Interesting. If so, that would require work. It could be done, but is it really necessary? Why don't you just demo the existing railing and replace it with another railing? If you can't, explain why. Maybe the explanation will yield another solution.

You can still add new railing to a stair that already has existing railing, by Railing > Sketch Path > Pick New Host > Pick the stair or stair run.

Are we talking about something like this?
Or did I understand you correctly the first time?
...just to clarify: all the other railing in screenshot is Existing with Phase Demolished set to "None".
You CAN add new railing on existing stair over demolished railing. Please read the response and watch the screen cast again.

Existing rail is shown as demo’d. I am thinking to just do linework for the demo rail (delete the existing rail altogether). As revit will not add a new rail. (even the exiting demo’d rail will prevent adding another rail at the stair)
I'm not following. Describe what you are doing in the real world. Is the contractor replacing the entire rail or just the handrail or just some portion of the rail?
...post your file here. Maybe that'll help us to help you.
