Add-ins or Add-ons?

Sometimes they are interchangable but technically they not entirely the same:

1. an add-in is a component or app that enhances the softwares functionality and relies completly on the host software environment (ie: cannot run without the host application core functionality)
2. an add-on is an app that adds additional features and can work independently from the host software (aka. extensions)

Whether its a mix up or an intended uses of both terms, its not that much of a big deal. Revit has so many inconsistancies that you should be criticizing (loudly all over) rather than wasting time on proofreading Autodesk's online manuals

Just got in a discussion on this today. In conversation I told someone to download the Navisworks Coordination "Add-on" and he noticed it's called an "Add-In" and questioned whether it was the right tool. Great attention to detail from a really smart employee! 🙂

What would be an example of an add-on that can work independently of the host (Revit)? All add-ins or "ons" I use CANNOT work outside of Revit. That would have to be a software I start up in addition to Revit and also could use if I didn't have Revit. Like if I had a data-link between Revit and Excel, Excel would be able to also work without Revit. But i don't think anyone considers Excel to be anything to Revit. The dynamo visual programming tool I think could be used as standalone, not sure what for if not for Revit, though. And Qbitec also can run the converter tool without Revit (but the resulting files are useless without Revit)

And I have another term: "plug-in'"
