Acquiring Coordinates from a point cloud in Revit 2019?

It has previously been possible to acquire coordinates from a pointcloud in Revit.

We previously created a Revit model from a cloud that was did not have real world coordinates. The cloud has since been coordinated and we need to shift the uncoordinated model to the coordinated cloud.

We have been able to do this in previous versions of Revit (we have mostly been using Revit 2018).

The process we use is as follows: Open the (uncoordinated) Revit model; link in the (coordinated) cloud origin to origin, move the cloud to the Revit model manually, then acquire the coordinates from the link.

This is the first time we have attempted this in Revit 2019 and we are unable to select the cloud as a link when prompted...

We have tried the reverse process (linking the model to a file with the cloud in it and publishing coordinates) but Revit just crashes out whenever we try to link the model.

All select options are ticked so that isn't the issue either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @jonathan_lyons_surveybase

Can you please post a screencast of what you are seeing?

Is it possible that you share the Revit model, point cloud files, and a journal to investigate further? Let me know and I can share a private folder link.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Regards,

Unfortunately I can't share any of the data.

The main issue I'm having is that Revit won't let me select the pointcloud when prompted to 'Select a linked project from which to acquire shared coordinate system' after selecting 'Acquire Coordinates' as shown below.

Hi @jonathan_lyons_surveybase

Are you trying to acquire Shared Coordinates through Revit Cloud Worksharing?

Hi @jonathan_lyons_surveybase

Can you please let us know the specific version of Revit 2019 that you've used?

Your issue was investigated for a resolution.

Here is the case update based on our recent communication.

The issue was reproduced based on the file you've sent us and file was tested with Revit 2019.0.1

Here are the steps:

  • Create new project with template
  • In floor plan view, delete elevation tags
  • Create default 3D view and delete all levels
  • Link point cloud file ALL.rcp
  • Link the RVT model 171009_30-31-32_CG-WG-ALL-MM-0444_Existing_A[1].rvt
  • Move / Rotate / Copy & Paste the link rcp
  • Publish coordinate to the link rvt
  • No crash

Can you confirm if you are on the latest build? Please see HERE and check your Desktop App for updates.

I look forward to your reply update.

Regards,

Hi @jonathan_lyons_surveybase

I just wanted to follow up here, any progress on this issue? Did you have a chance to go through the steps listed in the last post and the specific version of Revit you use? (2019 or 2019.1)

Looking forward to your reply update and we can continue the case.

Regards,

Hi @jonathan_lyons_surveybase

This issue was reproduced with 2019_Ship_x64_Inst_20180216_1515 (same revit build as customer's).

But it cannot be reproduced with Revit 2019.0.1 (UPD01_20180518_1600) build.

So it is recommended that you try to install Revit 2019.0.1.

Autodesk Revit 2019.0.1 Hot Fix Readme

I'm marking this as a solution for now, if you want to continue the conversation, and have additional questions, please let us know.

Thanks!

Hi

I have the latest version of Revit 2019 and it's updated with the latest Hotfix as well, but I am still not able to select the .rcs/ .rcp link to push the coordinates into my Revit file. Please advise what I should do.

Enable Select Links from the bottom right status bar.

Huh? What do you mean by "push the coordinates into my Revit file"?

Hi  barthbradley,

Thanks a lot for replying, I have linked and aligned multiple point clouds into my Revit file but as the file is shared by multiple users there is always a fear of aligned point clouds being detached. So I was hoping to publish the coordinates from Revit into point cloud so even if the files are detached they can be reloaded in the same location. When I was trying to do this, I was not able to select the point cloud link to publish coordinates. I want to know if there is a solution?

I have done that still doesn't work. I even checked to see if the point cloud was pinned. Nothing works. I am not able to select the point cloud at all.

Put the Point Cloud in it's own RVT and Link and Share Coordinates with that RVT.

Maybe Revit can't publish the shared coordinates to a pointclouds after all, unlike linked RVT or DWG.  You can always link the pointclouds in a different RVT, origin to origin, then link that RVT in to yours, align and publish coordinates back to that link.

Origin to Origin?  Link it via Shared Coordinates. That'll put the PC origin at the origin of the Shared Coordinates System.  Then lock and load, baby.  That how we roll.

But in the default OOTB Revit template, Origins are top of one another -- so six of one, half dozen of another. Just remember to pin.

Can someone please explain how can this be done in Revit 2019/2020?

I tried with loading the point cloud to a new Revit project by shared coordinates and then linking that project to a new Revit file. But I do not seem to see that link and acquire coordinates from it.

Hello @Viveka_CD ,

I still did not manage to acquire coordinates from a point cloud in Revit.

I followed your steps as follows:

  • Create new project with template
  • In floor plan view, delete elevation tags
  • Create default 3D view and delete all levels
  • Link point cloud file test.rcp
  • Saved the project as test.rvt
  • Opened a new project with template and linked test.rvt by shared coordinated.
  • Revit prompted that projects do not share the same coordinate system
  •  Did not find the link model (with the test.rcp) in the new project

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Link the test.rvt in origin to origin then acquire coordinates.

@ToanDN I did link the test.rvt model in my new project as origin-to-origin but I cannot see the revit link in any view. So once hitting acquire coordinates I have no link to choose.

BTW, I do see that link in Manage Links - which means that the link was loaded successfully..

Please advise.

Open the test.rvt where you placed the point cloud and draw a couple of gridlines at a corner of the point cloud. Then reload it in you project and you should see the grid lines in order to select the link to acquire coordinates.
