Is there any comprehensive matrix corelating the long list of Family template files [ ***.rft ] that comes by default with each Revit installation, with the purposes for which each of the templates can be used for making parametric families.
For example if we need to create "L" shaped parametric columns we can start picking up - [Metric Structural Column.rft] & move forward.
The matrix can appear as :
Metric Structural Column.rft <=> Creation of L shaped parametric family.
No, not that I can recall.
The Template Files are there to apply Pre-Defined Categorised Families as you have indicated and to apply default constraints if the family needs them base on Levels and Placements.
So for instance if you needed to Create an L-Shaped Structural Column you would start with the Structural Column.rft and then rename the Column as required, what you see in the Library is what is available from Autodesk directly!
Obviously there may be other sources out their on the internet from Third-Party content.
Most would not start from scratch and use an existing Column Family and Edit it for their needs such as the Parameters are consistent with Revit existing Families and simply Save_As - so look for Content (Existing Families) that may already have a lot of the work already done for you!
I don't think using In-Place families is a good practice unless they serve a specific purpose. Specifically, for structural family creation, I suggest always using the appropriate default family template for better results.
The topic says In-Place Families and then you talk about Family templates, which are Loadable Families?
For Family templates, see Help | About Family Templates | Autodesk
