3D Trapezoid Void in the Roof or Floor as Skylights

Hi Ladies and Gents,

I am having a rather pressing issue here. I want to create these trapezoid cone shaped openings for the skylights placed above.

I am relatively new to Revit although have already a good grip of the program. Using Rhino extensively previously I would create a slab, void desired shape from it (in this case rectangle) and modify points of the inner cut so the cone shape opening is created.

I ve used Vertical cut tool but that just allows me to cut out void in the same shape all the way through and does't leave any freedom of 3 dimensional modification.

I can always use walls across and change its shape to desired form in the section. This method seems to be not correct though.

Please I will be very happy to hear your thoughts.

Taking in consideration that you need more holes like this , I'd use a parametric Blend Void Face Based Family  as the attached one.

The family is made in Revit 2017

I made the height as an instance parameter so to make easy the adjustment to the distance between the roof(floor) and ceiling

Thank you for your fast reply. It almost solved my problem although I am having further problems that I cant solve yet. First of all how to chamfer a corner/side of a floor (Image 1) ? I did try to create a mass in that shape and then turn it into a floor but for some reason I am able to select only faces of the mass and turn them into separate walls/floors.

Secondly I did try to fiddle with the family you have created and failed. I do need 2 different types, one that extrudes in both ways simultaneously as you did. And one that I have more control moving 4 points on the top and bottom independently to have one side of the void straight and the other on an angle as you see on the Image 2.

Thank you for all of your help !

  • for the floors(or roofs) with a sloped area part , you can use Modify Sub-Elements -as in my screencast

  • for the holes with asymetry - see the attached file

Thank you ! I finally made it ! Still it goes slow and requires practice. Need to understand more how family creation works, its instances etc. Additionally understanding of how work planes work. I was getting and error all the time 'Can't cut instance(s) of ....XXX... out of its host REVIT. Created it from scratch and slowly it started to cut it in the right way. Additionally for some reason void B is still not hosted despite I have created it on the face of the slab. Possibly the problem is that the slab was elevated by 500mm up to touch the ceiling. To add to it there as still some mistakes where the arrows point out. One would probably create the whole structure as one piece and cut out voids out of it. Possibly already with the window in it (  just like Dzan Ta did on this viedo : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYyZIdRKZvw

Thanx !
