2D vs 3D Famlies - How to identify

Is there a way to know if a family is a 3D family or 2D family other than trying to create an instance in a particular view?

Thanks

One method is to double click the family, which opens it in the editor.  If there is only one view available, it is a 2d based family.

Ah, yeah, that's fair. I guess I was trying to see if there was some sort of property which would display this information or tells Revit that it is in fact a 2D or 3D.

You could use some sort of naming convention for your families to identify 2d or 3d in the project browser, but overall annotation/profiles/detail items ie. is 2d the rest more or less 3d I suppose, generally speaking...

There are 2D families and there are 3D families which you can identify by checking under which category do they fall in the project browser - example:

  1. Detail Item, Detail Item Line based, Annotation families, Profile Families, ...etc - those are 2D families
  2. Generic Models, Doors, Window, Furniture, Entourage...etc - those are 3D families

There are some people who use a 3D families and only place 2D graphics therein, Such families WOULD STILL BE CONSIDERED 3D FAMILY even if it is just 2D lines...If your question is "how to check if a 3D family contains a 3D geometry or just 2D components ", the answer is YOU HAVE TO OPEN IT AND CHECK (Unless the one whoever modeled the family was clever enough to set the 3D View showing the geometry as a preview)

You could use the add-in "Family Size Reporter". It may not be 100% perfect but it's a lot faster than manually opening each family and examining their contents.
