2016 Frequently stuck in Sketch/Edit mode

We finally starthed working in Revit 2016, As 2017 is released...

Everyone keeps getting stuck in Edit or Sketch mode.  What is going on with this?  How can you get out of the mode and still save all of the custom stuff that we just made.  Revit won't let us save the changes.  We lose all of the work done.  There must be some sort of fix for this.  Whats the word?

Thanks

I start here:

  • Make sure you have the latest updates (service packs) installed.
  • Check your Graphics Card and Driver, try a newer one if available.
  • Revit doesn't like Display Zoom greater than 150%, in some cases anything more than 100%

Sometimes people think they are stuck but the tab they need is no longer in focus, Revit has moved its focus to another ribbon tab. Examine the tabs and look for a green colored one, or two. Clicking on that should return the focus to the correct tab. If that isn't relevant in this case then...

Regardless of all of the above...identify the commands that are getting stuck and create a Keyboard Shortcut for the corresponding Finish Edit Mode, or just assign the same key combination to all of them, for each tool, there are quite a few. If the mode gets stuck again, using the Keyboard Shortcut should allow you/them to finish the mode.

This might be 2 years late, but in 2017 this still sometimes happens ( not sure about rvt 18/19).

I have found that you CAN finish with some wiggling. Though there's no guarantee.

Whenever I get stuck in this edit mode the following happens.

Revit doesn't show the finish sketch, and any hotkey assigned to said button also does not work.

It seems as if revit is confused, it doesn't know in which mode it is in. ( Sometimes it doesn't even SHOW the modify tab )

I suggest you try all of the following:

1. Ctrl+C , Ctrl+V an element of your sketch (NOT move/copy)

2. Create a new project (CTRL+N) and CTRL+TAB back to your current project.

3. Copy/Move a sketchline and press the UNDO button once.

4. Go to "View/Windows/User Interace" and toggle "Recent Files"

5. Toggle your ribbon appearance ( rarely works though )

All these tricks are an attempt to kickstart revit's UI into updating again in an attempt to have the finish options reapear.

Hi All, this problem is still at large and is catching me out on a regular basis. I have tried adding shortcut command to 'finish edit mode' which can work, sometimes. I have just managed to escape the dreaded grey screen death grip by toggling the 'Undo' drop down and going back a few commands.

I hope this helps other and that Autodesk sort this issue out as its wasting a lot of peoples time Im sure

I wouldn't be so sure. Judging by this thread, there have been two people in over 5 years.

This can sometimes be caused by the button group being undocked or floating and it and end up off screen. If you're using multiple monitors you can fix this by turning 1 off and then on again, followed by turning the other off and then on. If you're only using 1 monitor try changing the screen resolution to something larger.

+1, so now it is 3 people in 5 years...and who knows how many others who simply give up and crash out of their Revit without bothering to dig around for a solution in the forums. I actually thought that the issue was resolved as I haven't encountered it in recent versions....until today it happened to one of my users running the latest and greatest 2022.1 version...

Happened to me today. Given how long this has been an issue, most likely an incurable bug... Or because this doesn't trigger a hard crash there is no error reporting. It will never be at the top of their list because the user has to force quit.

Go to View > User Interface > Keyboard Shortcuts. See if you have a shortcut for "Finish". If not, add one, and use the letter(s) to finish. This helps me get out of being stuck in edit mode every time. My shortcut is "FG" which may have been something Revit assigned automatically.
