Upgrade Checking

Has anyone ever experienced any data loss when upgrading a file from Revit 2016 to 2017 (or similar)? Is this a possibility?

We currently check the models and drawings for any changes following an upgrade, so far we have not found any differences. Other companies I've spoken to are doing the same thing. I'm questioning if this a worth while exercise?

How does the upgrade software work? Is there any chance it could affect the model geometry, data or views?

Hi, I experienced weird things when upgrading to a newer version of revit, but not specific in the versions 2016-2017. So yes, it can happen.

When upgrading from Revit 2014 to 2016 we batch upgraded ~3k project files and ~1k family files.  There was no known data loss experienced.  We did, however, have to deal with a change to how Revit handled visibility of faced based families that had been joined.

Fortunately we tested 2016 with a small set of projects before upgrading all our existing projects and knew about this bug and had a plan to deal with it.  So yes, as Remy says, things can happen.
