RevitAddinUtility usage and redistribution permissions.

RevitAddinUtility usage and redistribution permissions.

Not applicable

I read an old blog from (http://thebuildingcoder.typepad.com/blog/2010/04/revitaddinutility.html) on RevitAddinUtility.dll which states that this dll can be shipped freely with the Revit Addin installers. But I was looking for some Autodesk Documentation or License or something of that sort, clearly granting permissions to freely ship the RevitAddinUtility.dll in Revit addins.

Also regarding following excerpt from the blog, has there been any update?

RevitAddinUtility.dll is a stand-alone tool and does not depend on any other Revit modules. Revit application developers can freely include it in their installers.

Currently, this DLL is located in the product install folder. The long-term plan is for it to be moved into the SDK. The intention is to allow redistribution of the DLL with program installers, although there is no legal language about that in the Revit install or SDK at this point.

Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Dear Chintah Shah,

Thank you for your pertinent question.

Off-hand, I believe nothing has changed since then.

I'll check with the development team for you.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Thank you for the response @jeremytammik!

If nothing has changed since then, does it mean Autodesk allows to freely redistribute the RevitAddinUtility.dll in the installers?

Best Regards,

Chintan

One Revit senior engineering manager says: "I have never seen a license agreement covering this one way or another."

On the other hand, the intention has always been clear: freely redistributable.

I would go ahead and use it as it is intended.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Dear Jeremy Tammik,

Just wanted to check with you if there has been any change in the usage permissions for RevitAddinUtility.dll since your last reply on this post.

Is it still freely redistributable as of Revit 2025?

Kind Regards.

Nope, nothing changed. Check whether it is included in the Revit product distribution. If so, the Revit product license probably applies. Anyway, what use would the DLL be without a Revit installation?

"The .NET utility DLL RevitAddInUtility.dll offers a dedicated API capable of reading, writing and modifying Revit Add-In manifest files."

Is useful to create the the manifest file the .addin in the build process without the need to create manually. In Revit version 2025 the dll is .NET Standard 2.0.

I actually recreate a similar package only to create the .addin and the PackageContent.xml. That what I have been using in my build process to create .bundle files for the Revit plugins.
