Hello, Dear, can Revit convert 2D cad files into 3D BIM models? Is there any idea to automate the conversion into a 3d model? If you can't, tell me why, thank you very much!

Hi @Anonymous ,

A CAD file cannot be converted to the Revit model directly. One can only link the file in the plan, elevation, section, and details of a CAD file to a project in Revit and can use it as an underlay. We can take the line as a reference for creating the wall in Revit but we can’t convert a line to a wall in Revit. You have to rebuild your construction from scratch.

There is not enough information in a 2-D drawing in order to create the Revit model automatically. You can bring the AutoCAD drawing in as a background and you have to recreate the building in Revit.

I hope this helps.

Yes, Revit can convert 2D CAD files into 3D BIM models, but there’s a catch. It’s not a one-click process; Start by importing the 2D CAD file into Revit. Use Revit tools to trace over the 2D CAD geometry and build walls, floors, and other 3D elements. Revit doesn’t interpret 2D data into 3D directly. Tools like Dynamo in Revit can automate repetitive tasks during the conversion. The absence of semantic data (like materials or system connections) in 2D files is why full automation isn’t feasible. Human interpretation ensures design intent is accurately reflected. For large-scale projects, consider outsourcing to experts who specialize in CAD to BIM conversion.
