New to Revit API

I'm new to Revit API (not used yet) but quite familiar with Revit itself and computer programming, C++, Visual Basic.  Does anyone have any suggestions where I should start to get familiar with the API and what tool(s) to interface with?  I'd like to access the database and hidden parameter values, arrays, etc.  Thanks!
