How can I create continuous pipe, duct or conduit placeholder?

I tried to follow this blog post but somehow I end up creating disconnected placeholders.

I had 10 lines and I created 10 disconnected pipe placeholders with 10 different systems.

How can I create 1 connected system?

If each placeholder ends up defining a separate disconnected system, then the placeholders have not been connected correctly with each other.

Run through the scenario manually in the end user interface and compare that with the model that you create programmatically; spot the differences, fix them, and all will be well:
