Is there a way to change the column type in the excel so it will update in the Revit model?

I'm using Di-roots for this but if there is another add-in that enables me to do this please let me know.

Yes. Please refer to the official Revit SDK sample FireRating. It demonstrates bi-directional data exchange between Revit and Excel using element ids. It is written in VB.NET, but we also have a C# version available somewhere. You can also look at the ADN Xtra labs and the FireRatingCloud samples:
