Creating markers on points in space

Hi!

I'm experimenting with writing a simulation add-in that needs some points in space as additional inputs. However, I am fairly new to Revit and its concepts, so I am at a total loss regarding something supposedly very simple: How can I (programmatically) create movable markers for points floating in space that are not actual objects of any kind? What is the right approach here?

I will also need different kinds of markers. Is there a way to make them visually distinct?

Regards,

Gregor

Dear Gregor,

I can only answer you from the API point of view.

In Revit, the API almost never enables you to do anything that cannot be achieved manually through the user interface, so you might want to check somewhere else with product support, an application engineers, or other product usage expert what is the best way to address your need in the Revit user interface before starting to think about implementing anything programmatically.

As you know, Revit represents a BIM, building information model. Its support for non-BIM elements, i.e. anything whatsoever that does not represent a 'real' part of the building, is somewhat limited.

The AVF analysis visualisation framework may or may not include support for the kind of markers you are after. Again, you would need to ask a product usage expert to find out for sure.

If not, all I can think of is placing model curves or family instances to represent the markers.

Exactly that technique is in fact used and demonstrated in certain Revit SDK samples, e.g. AnalysisVisualizationFramework/DistanceToSurfaces.

You might want to check out the other AnalysisVisualizationFramework samples as well.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. I hope this provides one little step forward, though.

Cheers,

Jeremy
