Skull 3D model

Does anyone have any advice on how to complete a full 360 degree model ? I want to do a model of a skull but it didn't work. Am trying to get the principles correct before taking better images but my test of 151 images failed. Can do horizontal plane models easily but this is my first attempt at a full 360.

Any advice ?

Hi @Anonymous,

that is actually one of my favorite subject 🙂 ...Let us start from the base! Could you post a screenshot of your photo set? That would allow me to understand what caused your project to fail. Also, tell us more about the way you scanned it, the camera you used, etc.

Cheers,

Hi.

Thanks for replying.

To date I have had success with producing horizontal 180 degree models with no problems (https://sketchfab.com/models/2d4e7a7b895749b8a424999735f156fe), but what I would really like to achieve is something like this (https://sketchfab.com/models/4b1ad3107de049f6af2c6d77f0113b56), the carpenters skull from the Mary Rose

At this stage I am trying to find the methodology and haven't yet taken any detailed images.  I took 151+ images last night with a Nikon D90 that I used for my previous successful models and imported them into Autodesk Remake to see what would be produced.  My first attempt (see Version 1 3D image) was of limited success.  It did produce a 360 model but not only did it have faults and gaps but it imported in the cloth I used to hide the table.  Not good.  (see screenshot of images Version 1)

Thinking that the programme was confused by the cloth I removed the background in photoshop (screenshot Version 2) and attempted to produce that, but it failed.

Any suggestions would be appreciatedVersion 1 Screenshot.jpgScreenshot.jpgScreenshot.jpg

Image 1 - shows the 3d model produced with the original images taken on the cloth.  It has brought in the cloth on top of the skull.  Screenshot of the images used in below (image 2). Thinking that the fault lay with the background, I removed it in photoshop (image 3 screenshot above) but it failed.

PS - so far I export the models in Sketchfab which compresses the model somewhat.  I know there is a way to use Autodesk Gallery but I have yet to master it.  I presume there is a way to export models in Gallery more effectively ?  Any advise on that front would be appreciated too.

Hi @Anonymous,

i think you are almost there! To achieve a result like the carpenters skull from the Mary Rose, you would need two more round of photo from different angles. I usually take a first round of photos shooting 1 picture every 3° on the horizontal plane, ending up having 120 pictures. Then i take two more round of photos, this time taking 1 picture every 6°, ending up having 60 photos per round. These last two round of photos are taken from a different angle with respect to your starting horizontal plane. Basically, you take one more round from the top (your new camera should have an angle 5-10° with the horizontal plane) and one from the bottom (hence minus 5-10° with the horizontal plane). So, basically you will end up by having something like 240 photos.

Never use photoshop to remove background, overall if you collect your photos by turning around the object, as Remake is using background features to interpolate the data. You background should be still but it should also be sharp as the rest of the photo.

The cloth will not be a problem.

To export your model to the Autodesk Gallery, just click on Export to Gallery on the action menu, than you will be redirected on Play, where you can customise your object navigation window and its features (like light, shading, etc) and, then, posting it in Autodesk Gallery.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

V.
