Translate/rotate coordinate system

Translate/rotate coordinate system

Currently we can only redefine the origin and pick point from the point cloud which define new origin and it's orientation. But sometimes it is not accurate enough or it is hard to pick the correct point.

I would like to be able to translate the origin by specifying an X, Y or Z distance. Same thing for the rotation around X, Y or Z Axis.

This would help for fine tuning and to get an accurate positionning of the point cloud.

This is especially relevant if the point cloud was delivered on a mapping system which places it hundreds of miles/km from the origin point; when this file is loaded into 3DS Max for example, the graphics engine cannot cope with large coordinates.

If we have 4 recap files, all on the same map system and we need to move them all relative to each other (say -100km, -200km) there is no way to do that (that I am aware of) without being able to define a start coordinate and a finish coordinate (i.e. -100,-200 to 0,0).

I've wanted this for years! So very on board with this request! Hope Autodesk is listening.

I need this function for a client that requires each job to be delivered in 2 different coordinate systems, one oriented to north and one to plant grid. The plant is not oriented to north and there are 2 angle points within the plant. In Cyclone we can easily set and store multiple coordinate systems based on 2 points with an x,y,z on one point and an azimuth to the other. We deliver Recap files to our clients but find that we must download the BLK360 data into Cyclone to set the coordinate systems which adds about 8 hours of work in the office to register the clouds, unify, export pts and re-import into Recap. We are scanning an average of 100 scan locations per day for this client. Not being able to change the coordinate systems arbitrarily like we can in Cyclone has added about 6-8 hours of office work per project. This is significant. We were hoping the BLK360 direct to recap would speed up our process but find that it is one step away from being useable in this manner.

Please add this feature ASAP.

Is anyone aware or know if this was attended? Is there a solution around this problem.

It would be great if this were possible. I don’t believe it is on Autodesk’s radar.

@vidanom has this item progressed any further past 'under review'

Not that I’m aware of. The last I heard is all development regarding ReCap has stopped, and only bug fixing is happening. To know for sure, someone from Autodesk should chime in.

I believe the latest ReCap release 2020.1 (Version 6.1.0.71) now has Mario's feature requested back in July of 2015.  To get the values needed for this dialog box I assume I still use my same workflow.  Reference point cloud data into AutoCAD, visually position data, then extract the new coordinates and orientation back into ReCap.  This labor intensive workflow only applies until surveyed monuments are established in your plant.

We at FCA are establishing virtual targets in our plants to align our point cloud project data.  Therefor, his new feature does not add value to me.  Perhaps ReCap users can share their thoughts on how this new software feature can be best used.

We just tested this out and it works perfectly for our purposes to Translate point clouds quickly.  Thanks dev team!!  (Even if it did take a while!)

This is great, exactly what I requested 5 years ago.

I've tried it and works pretty well.

Thank you Michael Mizuno and your development team 🙂
