Point Cloud Decimation by Region

Point Cloud Decimation by Region

When you create a Scan Region it would be great to be able to decimate the scan by individual region.

House Scan Sample;

Create regions (walls, floors, ceiling etc.). Decimate individual regions, say 0.1m x 0.1m grid. You don't need  100's thousand scan points to define a ceiling.

Road Scan Example;

Create a region of the road surface only. Decimate that region to 1 x 1m grid. Then import .RCP into civil 3d and create tin of the road surface.

Once the scans are decimated by region, the overall file size will be reduced and easier to share with clients or easier to deal with in Civil 3d. Yes, you can decimate the scan to make a tin/surface in civil 3D but not with this type of flexibility.

Thanks in advance 😉

Hi, thanks for the ideas.  This is mostly possible now, by isolating each region and exporting to Unified RCS (that export asks for a decimation level).  This will create separate point clouds for each region - if you want those back together you can create a new ReCap project and add those RCS files to it.

I would really like to see this as well especially for roads and subdivisions. The 100mm decimation doesn't work either as most of my points are still about 10mm apart no matter what I select or how many iterations I try.

A  true 1m decimation would be great to export earthworks/topo (not as important) and reindex the trimmed kerbs to form one new job with a high density of points on features such as concrete kerbs and walls joined with the very low density topo.

When inserted into Civil3D and converted to a surface it would be quicker and easier. (I'm in the hundreds of million points, very large sites)

NB I create the cloud in Pix4D which is not able to decimate by region either, so hoping someone comes up with a solution. ReCAP Photo cannot handle enough images yet and is only cloud which doesn't suit remote areas (bad internet)

Kind Regards,

Gary
